Living with nature

We have always paid attention to an environmentally friendly way of life, coupled with a great love of animals. When we decided to develop Schloss Mörlbach into a co-living residence, environmental protection, conservation of resources and living close to nature played an important role.

A meticulous waste separation (with subsequent sorting by our staff), the use of regeneratively produced electricity or the replacement of all plastic floor coverings with those made of solid wood are just a few examples of how we put our credo into practice. And we have always had no plastic dishes or cutlery, and no plastic straws.

We clean almost exclusively with Frosch products (organic quality since 1986) and other ecologically degradable cleaning agents, and it goes without saying that only LED lamps provide good light, as well as water-saving shower heads and the most extensive renunciation of clothes dryers (we also recommend our guests and long-term tenants to dry their clothes in the fresh air or in the boiler room).

Our large garden is not irrigated artificially at any point, but with the help of rain cisterns or water from our castle pond. Of course, we do not use pesticides and herbicides and artificial fertilization of plants and the meadow. Our small flock of sheep mow the lawn and instead of deafening, unbearable leaf blowers, we use the good old leaf rake, just like in the old days, even if it costs more.

In 2024 we will switch our heating and hot water from oil to wood chips and pellets, which come from the forests of the region; pellets we use only those with certificate of origin. Our goal is to become 100% CO₂-neutral with the heating system in this way: Only as much CO₂ is released as was previously bound from the atmosphere in the growth of the trees. By replacing 22,000 liters of heating oil annually, we reduce our CO₂ emissions by over 64 tons per year.

Many of the foods we offer in the self-service mini farm store are of organic quality or regional origin, including fresh Demeter raw milk from the Assenhauserhof farm in Farchach. Above all, don't miss the eggs from our free-range chickens, which feed independently from nature and receive from us only Demeter feed in addition, to taste. We get our wine from the top biodynamic winemaker Schwarztrauber (Neustadt an der Weinstraße), which beats everything you can buy at the same price in the supermarket or wine merchants.

We would also like to invite you to the free consumption of our home-grown herbs, which you will find in the bathtub and the containers next to the garage in the garden.
Eventually, in addition, there will be fruits and vegetables for self-harvesting.

Bird and flower paradise

Old wood, tree stumps, piles of leaves and nettle islands are refuges for insects and animals and are therefore largely not removed by us.

In consultation with Dr. Spatz, the Starnberg district's bird commissioner, we have installed countless birdhouses on trees and walls whose design (height, position, hole size, orientation) is intended to provide breeding and nesting sites for tawny owls, barn swallows, swifts, stock doves and other rare bird species.

We leave the lawn in our large, park-like garden largely to itself and our sheep - only the impressive terrace slope we have since 2021 planted with 200 rose bushes, hydrangeas, grasses and others.
